Homecoming week came and each day the kids were encouraged to dress a certain way.  The first day was "colorful" day.  Jacob went all out, which was shocking for me because he usually does not get into this sort of thing.

Then we showed up to walk with our group and a certain future daughter in law's mom was talking about how heavy Ashley's backpack was....
 :)

The next day was "be anything you want day" or something, and a certain future daughter in law called the night before to see if she could borrow carhop clothes.
:)

There are Bobs shoes now.  Bobs.  You know, like I call Jacob, Bob.  Of course I bought some.

This is really typical of my car on any given day.  I am documenting this only to make myself feel better when people make fun of me for not being able to remember anything.  See, I remember LOTS.  It's just that I have so MUCH to remember, some things are bound to slip through the cracks.
Here in the big box I have the tshirts for the parents on Jacob's football team.  I have to go through them all, make sure it is all correct, and then figure out who owes me what.  On the floor is a package Jon needed me to mail because UPS never came to pick it like they were supposed to.  And of course 2 boxes of cupcakes for 2 employees at work.

Here in the tub in the back seat I have the winter jacket orders from our employees that I have to go through, make sure everything is correct, & fill out forms for each person to sign. I don't even remember what was in that plastic bag anymore.  And that big giant blue bag is actually my "briefcase" I carry to and from work everyday.  In there I have everything from extra counterfeit pens & Advil to my uniform bookkeeping notebook & extra socks for Jon in case his get wet at work.
Seriously, Jacob is always complaining about how much stuff is in my car.  You can't see it but there is most likely a random football in there.  And probably a youth sized pair of shoes...

Couldn't go without a few football pics!!

Playing after (or maybe before) practice one day.  They are so hilarious/cute playing an impromptu game.

Michael and Morgan came over one day.  I can't remember the actual reason, but Morgan was in Jacob's gear within 5 minutes begging to play.

In the following video you will see jaw dropping displays of athleticism:

In this video you will get the rare opportunity to witness the famous "giggle until the opponent gives up" trick play:

And finally, you have the chance to see some major flirting (or whatever you would call what 9 & 10 year olds do).  Notice the golf cart going by in the background.  That is my future daughter in law and her sister.  I didn't count, but I'm pretty sure that cart went down our street no fewer than 15 times while we were out there.  And she doesn't live on our street....

Things A Mom of A Third Grade BOY Should Be Ready For...

The bad part first...

He will get bad grades.  What the heck is going on in 3rd grade??!!  I've heard plenty of other moms say that every other grade (falling on the uneven ones) are tough.  I hear reasons like new things are introduced in those years while the even years are kind of review years, the teachers start expecting more maturity from the kids as far as working on their own goes,  hormones...   Well, apparently it was all true.  I just didn't believe it.  Here is how I remember 3rd grade-and I am not exaggerating- IT. WAS. MY. FAVORITE.  except for having to learn to write cursive-I could never get my letters to slant correctly and so I got bad grades in penmanship all year.  But I was friends with a group of about 5 girls and it seems like every weekend we took turns going to each other's houses for a slumber party.  Lots of memories.  Well, for the Boy, I have signed 6 Fs to date, and we just hit the 9 week mark (4 of them in Math-Melissa and Nicole, I blame you for this).  Even Morgan is having "Morgan" trouble, which means she is bringing home Cs.  She has always been a straight A student.  Michael sent this text to me one night,  "I hate 3rd grade."  Pretty much sums up the classwork part of it anyway.

Right now I am thanking God everyday for his teacher.  She is so...NOT LIKE THE ONE FROM LAST YEAR.  You know, she actually gives a crap about TEACHING.  After Jacob had gone the 3rd time without bringing home what he needed to complete homework (book, study guide, etc) and the 4th F, I sent her an "I am at my wit's end" email (literally) and she called me right away.  We set up a meeting where she had come up with this chart to encourage him to do what he is supposed to do.  Which, in my pre-motherhood years, I would have frowned upon fiercely.  But I am here to tell you, if I have learned anything about little boys, it is that they respond better to rewards for good stuff than punishment for bad stuff.
The way it works:
She broke up the day into 5 time segments.  He has the opportunity to earn points during each segment based on appropriate behavior that she, Jon, Jacob and I came up with. That's right-AND JACOB. She wanted him there in the meeting so he wouldn't feel like we were attacking him, but rather helping.  So, if he gets a certain amount of points during the day, he gets to pick a reward at the bottom of the page.  I keep these all week, and have a sort of sister system going on at home where he earns XBox time for the weekend.  That is what he is most obsessed with (even more so than football), so now he literally starts off the week with NO time for the weekend.  He has to earn it by getting his points from the class time AND bringing home the appropriate homework material.  She even copy and pasted XBox controllers on the chart.  What.
Last week was our first full week with it.  He earned enough points on 3 of the days (it was only a 4 day week).  This got him a reward from the list on this sheet those 3 days, but only 3 hours of XBox time for the weekend.  If he makes the points for each day AND brings home homework stuff, he gets 1 hour of XBox time.  AND if he has an hour for each day of the school week by the weekend, he gets to DOUBLE the hours.

So, I also asked the school if they had an extra set of books I could "rent" for the year.  They said yes!! I was so happy you would have thought they just gave him a free pass for the year.  I had decided I needed to get Jacob to bring books home so we could study a little extra throughout the week, but who was I kidding?  He wasn't remembering to bring them home when he had teacher assigned homework, much less for EXTRA work. If the school had said no, I had already researched the prices on Amazon...

He will eat.  A LOT.  THE BOY IS ALWAYS HUNGRY.  And he always has been, but it was much more easily (and cheaply) satisfied.  But now, the boy eats full meals constantly.  I went to Costco and bought these huge bags of hamburger patties and chicken breasts AS SNACKS.  I mean, he will eat one of these after school.  Not for dinner, but AS AN AFTER SCHOOL SNACK.   I used to could give him some crackers, maybe with an apple.  But he will scarf that down and ask for more.  I couldn't just have him eating crackers constantly, obviously his body is needed more filling foods.

Time will become a major issue.  An egg timer is a mom of a boy's best friend.  Period.  I have always been a big fan.  But this year it is getting used even more because the boy will AR-GUE.  ABOUT. EVERYTHING.  And it's always, "5 more minutes...." So I just set the timer.  Whether it's timed for minutes left to watch tv before he gets ready for school, bed, or football, or I use it with the XBox timing,  it is getting used daily right now.

He will become a major slob.  And I don't mean just that he leaves toys all over the place.  I mean dirty clothes and trash.  I saw something sticking out from the ottoman the other day and found all of this.  I think it is about 5 pairs (5!) of socks, candy wrappers, a used bandaid, and food.

Ok, for the good part...
The boy loves some clothes and shoes.  He literally went from wanting all sport-related clothing (jerseys, Under Armor brand) to telling me one morning, "I want to start wearing church clothes to school (we don't get real dressed up-the Catholic in me coming out ;) because that is how Daniel and Miles dress."  So off to Once Upon a Child (a consignment store) and Goodwill we went.
This could actually be viewed as a bad thing, but I guess since I love clothes and shoes, I think it is adorable.  Plus his Grammy trained him from early on to love some Goodwill, so I am not spending too much (so far).  This entire outfit came from Goodwill, shoes and all, and cost $11 total.  Whoop whoop.

He will LOVE shoes.  Thankfully, it is tennis shoes he loves.  And these were actually my fault.  I saw them at Kohl's one day (curses) and had to have them.  For him, that is...  He wore them/carried them room to room for the first 24 hours he had them.  Here they are on the hockey table in his room when I FORCED him to take them off to sleep...
And here they are the next morning when he woke up and came downstairs.

He still loves a random stick (yes that is a LOT of other random crap in my car).  This stick was declared a "good walking stick."  Because we do a lot of stick-aided-walking around here.

He still loves to jump.  This is before school.  But it could have easily been after school, before or after football, before or after church...you get the picture.  If we've been gone for a while and I tell him I want him to do something when we get home, he will say, "PLEASE let me jump on the trampoline for a few minutes first..."  So I do ;)
Bad part alert***  If I try to go out there with him he asks me, nicely, to go back in because this is his "private time."  What.

He still LOVES to read with me.  So that makes up for it.  If for some reason we are getting into bed late, he will anxiously ask, "we're still going to read, right??"
The bottom book, Crash, was about a bully football player who came around in the end.  He liked it but said, "it was too lessony."  So if that NFL career doesn't pan out, he can obviously land a job as a book critic.
We just started the one on top.  It is a mystery and it is starting out super cute.  The author made a big deal about telling the reader the names and places in the book have been changed, so the reader can even "change them to something else" if we want.  So of course Jacob wanted to.  I had to get a pen and write down Jacob's names to help us remember.
Also, never go to bed without your trusting Nerf pistol.

Sorry for all the CAPITOLS.  I just read over this and realized I am apparently FIRED UP about this post ;)

Highschool Football Game!

The Collierville Rec teams were invited to participate in the highschool football game, and
JACOB WAS PUMPED.   He talked about it all week long.  All we were told was to be there by 6:30, and they would get to "participate on the field before the game."  So there was a whole mystery to it.

Walking to the game.  It's pretty awesome living less than 10 minutes walking distance from the field (which is located behind his elementary school because when it was first built it was the high school).

Jacob is sitting on the top row, 3rd from the right.

Jacob's friend from school, Alex.  He is on the Ravens.  He is also famous in our house from XBox fights/play/obsession.  Jon calls him our long lost son because he just finally actually came over to our house recently, even though we feel like he is in our house everyday...

So far it is all looking good for moms obsessed with taking pics.  That is the tunnel the high school players will run out of, the high school players are behind the tunnel, and the rec kids are standing beside it.  Jacob is the last orange shirt on the right.

And then this happened....they lined the cheerleaders up for the players to run through after the tunnel, then the little ones right after the cheerleaders to form a longer "tunnel"....

...then the band came out on the field right smack in front of everything.  What?  Who planned that???

Oh well...

We still had fun.  Well, at first Jacob was the only one having fun because I turned to talk to another mom for 30 seconds only to turn around and find the kids all playing OUTSIDE of the gates we just paid to go INSIDE of.  Fabulous.

We finally talked them into sitting down.

My little Bronco :)

Standing at the top, and slowly inching their way into the student section...

This happened another night, but you know, 2 for 1 blog post and all that...
A couple of moms and I are taking turns making the banner for the boys to tear through.  Last year the cheerleaders always made it, but it turns out this year they only had enough cheerleaders sign up to have them cheer at the first games of the night.  So we will only get them a couple times this season :(
This night it was my turn to make it.  And then Abby and I got to hold it!

The coach giving a pep talk before they ran out.  I will have to record this sometime.  It's pretty cute.

Tearing through the sign!

The remnants.

After practice play one night :)

Football!! The first few are a scrimmage.

Jacob is in all white, right in the middle of the screen, to the left of the kid in black.

He's in there somewhere...but the real reason I took this was because the coach had brought these weird helmet/hair net things for our team to wear to distinguish them from the other team.  Very odd.

First game!!

They take turns being "team captain," which really just amounts to being the ones to go out on the field at the beginning of the game and call heads/tails.  Jacob was one of them for the first game :)

Orange laces :)

So the coach sent out an email asking someone to be responsible for filling and bringing the water bottles to the games.  Of course I volunteered.  He wrote back, "wow, that was quick."  Yes, I am that mom...

His coach gives out stickers for good plays.  Everyone got the football for the first win, and everyone got the first horseshoe for a start-up.  The second one Jacob got for "best offensive player" from the first game!!

The boy can eat a 12 count nugget meal now.  And apparently isn't too worried about eating with gear on...

Jacob used birthday money to buy a new headset to talk to friends on the Xbox...

...a Halo Encyclopedia, a "cool" water bottle, a 3rd controller for the Xbox (bc you can have up to 4 people playing at once, duh), new shoes, and a goofy foam pic-axe toy that is from one of the video games he is obsessed with.  Oh, and a Denver Broncos key chain to hang from his backpack.

Birthday dinner was steak, rice, and bread.  No veggies, and he got to eat while playing video games.

The walk-to-school crew:  (from the left) Jacob, Julian, Jocelyn, Ashley.  Ashley, by the way, is my future daughter in law.  But she and Jacob don't know it yet.

Morgie Porgie got glasses!!

My mom came over one day and randomly brought socks for Jacob.  Truly awesome.

Looking at his Halo Encyclopedia.

Playing football before school one morning.  Awesomeness.

Swimming with Morgan on Labor Day.

This is Josh.  He went away to college.  But a few days before he left he came over to me and we had this conversation-
Josh:  Hey, Shae, you know those cupcakes you get for people for their birthdays? Where do you get them?
Me:  Usually at Gigi's...
Josh:  They sure are good...
Me:  Yea...   (??)
Josh:  You know my last day is Friday...
Me:  Yea...   (??)
Josh:  And my birthday is in November...
ahhhhhhh. Now I see where this is going   :)

All of our employees who went away to college.  Actually 2 of them went away last year, and come back for summer and Christmas breaks.

So we are constantly without pens.  Even though we need a pen OFTEN.  I, being an organized woman, have several in my apron (along with Sharpies and counterfeit pens).  But the other (male) managers never do, and always ask for mine, which means I have to hunt them down later.  I buy pens, but they just disappear.  One day in Office Depot, I spot these little beauties-they attach to your belt loop and the pen pulls out from it with a detractable cord.   I bought one for everyone, except Nelly.  She only works part time for us, so I am always forgetting about her when it comes to stuff like this.  So of course I went out and got her one :)

Apparently one day last week was declared "Official Walk Out" day for fast food employees.  Who declared this, I don't know.  But I do know we were told by our boss that we couldn't fire anyone who decided to take part in this ridiculousness.  None of our employees walked out-never mind that half of them didn't know about it, and the half that did know didn't realize they couldn't be fired.  Whatever.  Any excuse for me to buy cupcakes is good enough for me.

Corey is the girl with the glasses in the pic above.  She is just the sweetest little thing.  She got married last year but hadn't ever gotten her ss card and license changed.  She finally did, which meant a change in paperwork.  So we officially changed her file.  She was so excited.

On parent night at school, Jon had to work.  I was able to find a friend for Jacob to hang out with so he didn't have to sit in the hallway.  Ian is on the left, and that is his little brother on the right.

Jacob wanted to do a fantasy football league this year so Michael set one up for him.  Jon, Josh, Hallie, Michael, our nephew in California-Tim, and Jacob are in it.  Jacob took the draft very seriously and is totally pumped.

Jacob did a lot of smack talking during the draft.  In fact, that is exactly what he is doing/typing in the pic above.  And it was mostly directed to Michael.  So Michael named his team accordingly:

This is the video of him telling me who is on his team.  At the very end he says, "Yea, and I'm gunna kick your butt, Uncle Mike."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iFCvbeTbr8

An employee's mom went to a food auction (?) and bought a bunch of these.  It was just one giant Rice Krsipie Treat.  What.
